Man’s Search For Meaning

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps. Also with its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering. We can, however, choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl’s theory known as logotherapy, is derived from the Greek word logos – (“meaning”). It holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained. It is the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

At the time of Frankl’s death in 1997, Man’s Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey for the Library of Congress that asked readers to name a “book that made a difference in your life” found Man’s Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America.

Crime – What can we do about it?

We live in a world today where many just want to be in control of their own lives and not only that, they want control of the lives of the others. Such people seek to achieve this by intimidation and committing crime in its various forms.

Rebellion to God is at the heart of many a wrong action committed. When Adam and Eve sinned, sin took up residence in their beings and guess what? it was passed down from them to all their descendants(whom we are).

As mentioned previously, many don’t care about God and what He says. When people care about themselves, and live only for what they can get from life, crime results.  As a matter of fact, the first murder recorded in the Bible happened when Adam and Eve’s son killed  his brother in a fit of rage.

Crime rates grow worse every day: Murder, theft, rape, fraud you name it are present everywhere. At the heart of crime lies the selfish ambition to have desires met no matter what. Criminals don’t care about others or what God has to say about their evil deeds.

We can try as much as we want to find ways to decrease the crime rate. We can come up with ways to make our world safer but there is only one sure way. The only sure answer is to introduce people ruled by the tendency to commit crime to the One who can change their hearts and lives. When we accept Jesus as our Saviour and Lord, He heals every part of us from the things that have gone wrong in our pasts. He gives us life in place of death. We begin to care what God wants and seek to obey Him. He puts His love in our hearts and we begin to treat others with consideration and care.
